The Art of Practicing Tennis
How you practice tennis is almost as important as how often you practice tennis.
The following tips will help you get the most out of your private and group tennis
lessons.
- Arrive a few minutes early. Use this time before your lesson to stretch, warm up, and
go over the skills you learned at the previous tennis lesson. Be ready for the first ball. This will help maximize your lesson time
with the tennis instructor.
- Space your workout. Workout for a few hours in the morning, rest, have a good
lunch break, then do some more supervised match play for the afternoon session. Now implement the skills you learned
earlier in the day. Some players try to play four hours in a row, and in doing so form bad habits.
- Video Tape Your Lessons. One of the best ways to learn is to watch yourself from a third person perspective.
Many coaches offer video taping services. If you need, make a short list immediately after the tennis lesson of the
skills and techniques you learned. Watch the
video within the next two days - paying close attention to your movements and noting where you need to adjust to
achieve optimal performance.
- Eat! Make sure that your body has the energy it needs to play. Practice drills take a lot of mental and
physical energy. Bring a healthy snack, and plenty of water, for a mid-lesson boost!
- Take Notes. Before you leave the court, write yourself a few short notes about the lesson. Write down what you
learned, and the key elements of each drill. Refer back to these notes while you are watching the video, and just
before the next lesson.
